The Sandy Lane Gold Cup is Barbados' largest horse racing event and one of the most prestigious in the Caribbean. Each year spectators come from all over the world, and the event attracts local, regional and international jockeys and trainers, with thoroughbred horses from North American and the UK.
The event, sponsored by the Sandy Lane Hotel since 1997, takes place on the Garrison Savannah's 1800 metre (8.95 furlong) course and is open to horses aged three and over.
The first race of the day usually starts around 12:30pm with the Gold Cup race usually starting between 5-5:30pm.
